Chapter 6

In the Name of Jesus

A motorbike gang rode into a small New Zealand town near Te Puke and parked their bikes; they took their insignia and their jackets off, kicked their bikes over and knelt down in front of the astonished people. They publicly renounced their way of life and pledged to become followers of Jesus.

On another occasion in the business section of town thirty-four members of a criminal gang called Black Power, famous in Australia and New Zealand, arrived en masse. This gang was seriously feared and there was genuine distress as people braced themselves for what might happen!

The men knelt on the pavement amongst the people and cried out to Jesus to save them. The Holy Spirit came upon them; twelve months later they had been integrated into small groups and were growing in their faith.

This was not happening in a city or a nation famed for its well-known churches or powerful pastors. Like much of what God does it was starting in an obscure town in the South Pacific nation of New Zealand, in a distant place. Jesus came from the margins of Israel in Galilee and it seems that God still operates that way today. Here is why the glory of God was touching the streets.

An elder had stood up at church in Te Puke, located on the North Island of New Zealand one Sunday evening and said, ‘I’m not going to preach a sermon this evening, I’m going to read you excerpts from a book called The Grace Outpouring’. As he read to them about the kingdom of God and blessing, the Holy Spirit began to move amongst the congregation.

At the close of the meeting the elders got together and decided to respond to what they had heard. They sensed a new desperation for the work of the Spirit in their region and felt that they should meet six evenings per week to learn how to be a people of prayer and blessing.

So they started to meet. Eighteen months later it was still continuing—six evenings per week. People had moved into the town to be near the prayer meeting and be accessible if they could; eight local churches had joined in with them. The host church has had to appoint new pastors to help cope with the people who have become Christians in the prayer meeting. There have been waves of praise and blessing and waves of salvation and waves of healing.

One of the elders came from New Zealand to Ffald y Brenin to share the story with us. At an early prayer meeting, the parents of a little child suddenly became aware of their two-year-old crawling across the floor and lying across the feet of a nearby man, praying and simply calling out, ‘Jesus’. They think that the youngster continued for about five minutes before crawling off.

The man suddenly yelled and stood up and started walking around. They asked if he was all right. The man had been involved in an accident many years ago and had a deformed foot and constant severe pain.
