Zev Voss had two nephews in their twenties, sons of his sister. The diligent one, Barry Franzen, worked for him at Channel Marine Machining while attending night school. The other one, Curt Franzen, was a chucklehead who liked his weed, but he didn’t like to work—or rather, work hard. Curt Franzen happened to be driving through the Inland Empire after an interview at the ARI compound for a job as a security guard. He could think of nothing better than sitting on his ass, watching monitors and munching on Ritz Crackers. Having to get up now and then to help some drugged-out celeb, there to dry out, back to the room as he or she wandered around, stumbling and mumbling, in a robe.

Franzen happened to be driving past Willow Ridge and remembered going to a party there at a big-legged chick’s house. This dude he knew, Cody Bradford, had invited him. She’d had some good weed. He drove in and looked for the Cape Cod–style house he recalled. But things looked different in the day, and the place was more spare looking, he noted. He got turned around, but what the heck? He didn’t see too many people out, and these suburb types were so careless.

He parked and strolled around, trying this or that side or back door. At a nicely kept-up home down the street from the frame of one not yet completed, the back door was unlocked. It was Gwen Gardner’s house, and her daughter had left the door unlocked. He looked around for jewels or cash, but found neither. He did cop a snub-nosed .38 from a shoe box on a shelf in the closet and then quit the house. He tried a couple of other homes, then left the housing complex.
