Furry seemed to sense the fear behind her hesitation. “If something happens, just yell,” he said. “I’ll come and help.”

Flo turned and smiled gratefully at her friend. “You’ll come and save me. But who’s going to save you?”

“I don’t know,” Furry said, scratching his messy hair. “You, I guess.”

“Good night,” Flo said. “I hope.”

“G’night, Flo.”

Flo tucked herself into bed that evening, but she was too worried to fall asleep. Her little koala bear night-light didn’t do much to make her feel any better. Every shadow seemed to be a looming figure in the corner, waiting for her to close her eyes.

Where is Vane right now? Flo wondered. She listened for noise in the hallway. What if Mona or Jorge opened the door and let Vane into Furry’s apartment?

She got up twice to peer through the peephole in her apartment’s front door. Both times she was afraid she’d see Vane’s pale, silent face staring back at her. But there was no one there.

He’s probably wandering the halls, waiting for us to come out, Flo thought. Where is he going to hide tomorrow when the sun comes up? In the basement? Curtis lives down there; will he be safe?

The ceiling above Flo’s room squeaked, and she nearly jumped out of her skin.

“It’s fine,” she whispered to herself. “It’s just someone walking around up there. Probably a neighbor or something.”

Out of the corner of her eye, Flo thought she saw the long shadow in the corner move, so she jumped out of bed and flipped the switch to turn on the ceiling light. All the creepy shapes and shadows instantly disappeared.

Flo decided it was probably best to leave the light on. “Just for tonight,” she said to herself. Her heart raced in her chest as she climbed back into bed. “Or maybe until we get rid of that vampire.”

After what seemed like forever, Flo finally fell asleep.
