Intuition and Bias

These are inherent factors not measured on any scale; they’re just there. And they matter when you must make a decision about a person who is causing havoc for your employees.

When presented with a case of a person making or posing a threat, you will find that the intuition of a supervisor can be insightful; after all, they know far more about the “normal” baseline of their employee than someone an office or province not located nearby. And then we must factor in bias: that same supervisor may only be telling you part of the baselines of their suspicions because they may have hired the employee now under investigation. They may be afraid that as you evaluate a person who has mentioned homicide that you may judge the supervisor as being inept because they had a role in making a potentially bad hire.

These two primary factors must be included in the hierarchy of a case. Once again, just remember that they are here for a reason: they matter. The challenge is that in the hours in between when a person poses a threat versus acts upon one, there is often no insightful information to help as you evaluate the next steps: Do we place the employee on probation with pay? Do we separate immediately because of an overt violation of company standards? Do we mandate a fitness for duty evaluation because they may be emotionally unstable? Do we call the police and let them figure it out? Those are just some of the essential first questions in imminent situations. So, let’s look at some of the topics that then factor into what may lie behind the smiles of supervisors: “Oh, she’s a wonderful person. I’m not sure why someone called the compliance hotline about what she wrote on Facebook. She’s one of my best persons.” Or behind the smiles of an employee confronted about a provocative post: “Oh, please. I was just kidding. It was late at night, my boyfriend has a gun collection, and I just thought that posing with the gun and aiming it at a picture of my co-worker would be funny. I apologize.”
