Chapter Eleven

Svanhild hung up the phone and tried to ignore Bart’s inquisitive gaze. Unfortunately, the bear shifter wouldn’t be put off.

“Did I hear you have a date tonight?”

“Ja, you did.” She nodded, refusing to blush. Why am I acting like a tosk? “I meant to tell you about it.”

“With that guy Balder?”

“Ja.”

Bart’s grin widened. “Wow, you really like that guy, don’t you?”

Her first impulse was to scoff and roll her eyes, but she couldn’t deny she’d enjoyed every minute of the weekend she’d been with Balder. And she’d invited him to dinner tonight.

“Ja, I do. He’s not as bad as I first thought.” She shrugged to hide her discomfort. She hated eating crow. Damn feathers get stuck in my teeth. “He saved a little girl today.”

“That was him comin’ out of the burning building?” Bart whistled. “Damn, I didn’t think he had that kind of heroism in him.”

“Ja, me either.” She certainly hadn’t seen it in him when she first spotted him on the road to Kate’s house.

“Guess he’s more than just a crazy fanatic.” Bart nodded as he picked up a random part he kept on the desk to tinker with. “I had a feeling about him when he came with Angelina’s van. I didn’t like what I saw when he got to Kate’s, but he was much better by the time he showed up that evening.”

“You saw more than I did.” Svanhild shrugged and rubbed her neck. “So I was wondering if I’d be able to take the loaner car into town tonight for the date? I got the starter fixed on my bike, but there’s a lot more wrong with her than I thought.”

Bart nodded, his eyes narrowed. “Yeah, you can take the loaner tonight. Just make sure it’s got a full tank of gas when you bring it back.”

“I can do that. Thanks, Bart.”

“Yeah, you’re welcome.” He nodded again. “Come with me a minute. I got an idea about somethin’.”

He set the random part aside and ambled into the garage portion of the Fix-It Cave. They’d left the bay doors open to let in the fresh, warm breeze along with the sunshine, and a general sense of well-being settled over her shoulders. She followed him to the back of the garage where a large lump sat covered in a canvas tarp. He grasped the tarp and yanked it off, exposing a forest-green VW Bug from the last century.

“Wow, what’s this, Bart?” Svanhild gazed at the old car.

“This is a 1965 VW Bug with all the original upholstery, paint, and chrome.” He wore a proud-papa expression. “I found her at an estate sale and just had to pick her up.”

“For yourself?” Svanhild snorted. “Will you fit inside?”

Bart narrowed his eyes. “Are you callin’ me fat?”

“No, just big. Those European models were smaller than the current versions.” She nodded at the roof. “I think even my head would be brushing the ceiling.”

Bart smirked and winked. “That may be for the original versions of this car, but this little humdinger was owned by someone who knew a little magic.
