Guilt and Forgiveness

The bitterest tears shed over graves are for words left unsaid and deeds left undone.

—HARRIET BEECHER STOWE

A lot of us have unresolved issues with our departed loved ones. We think of what we did or failed to do, and we feel we have lost forever our chance to make up for these things. Well, the spirits on the other side feel the same way. In many of my readings, I’m apologizing from the people in heaven to the people living and vice versa. It is natural to have regrets after someone passes over, but such regrets may ease over time as we remember the love we shared. Guilt, on the other hand, is an extremely painful emotion that increases over time. As an Eastern master once taught, “When we are guilty, it is not our sins we hate but ourselves.” We feel guilty when we have done something wrong; when we believe we have offended someone and have not taken action to redress the wrong. And when death intervenes before we can atone and ask for forgiveness, guilt can become a burden we carry for the rest of our lives. It can stop everyone, spirits and those who are still here, from moving on.

There’s a reason that asking forgiveness and atoning for our transgressions is part of many religions. Asking for forgiveness cleans the slate, so to speak; it eases our burdens, clears our energy, and allows us to connect more completely with Essence. Don’t put off asking for forgiveness from those you love while you and they are still on Earth. It may not be easy to admit your mistakes or errors, but you don’t want to have such things on your conscience when you pass over. If you feel that you need to ask forgiveness from someone who has passed over, you can do so by utilizing the same kind of intuitive connection described in chapters 3 and 4.

ASKING FORGIVENESS FROM THOSE YOU HAVE LOST

Close your eyes, surround yourself with white light, and then connect with Essence. Then bring the image of your loved one into your mind and heart. Connect with them by sending them love, and then tell them how sorry you are for whatever you did or failed to do. With humility, ask for their forgiveness. Notice any thoughts, images, feelings, or emotions that come up that may be signs from your loved one that they have accepted your apology.
