USING YOUR MAP TO GET SOMEWHERE
Even without a compass, you can get to a destination with just your map. You know where you are on the map, and you’ve determined where you want to go. Your map must be aligned with the terrain.
You want to get to a small campground with the table and little stream. It’s located about half the map distance from your current location, and it is exactly 90 degrees from your current location. You know it is 90 degrees not because you have a compass (you don’t), but because it’s exactly in a horizontal line to the right of where you’re located.
The easy way to get there is to sight along that line on your map, from where you are to where you want to go, and extended to the east. Then, you have to line up two trees in an exact line, or any two objects in an exact line, and follow them. If you’re able to walk flat, in a straight line without obstacles, just keep lining up two objects and following them.
Remember, once you pick up your map from the table and start walking, your map is less useful unless you stop and realign it visually with the terrain.
If everything went well without a hitch, you should arrive at this little campsite in a few hours.
But is there a way to figure how far exactly each increment of the map equals, and how long that increment will take to travel?
