It’s not just enough to determine if you’re being followed. The person who is pursuing you must be confronted. Helen’s story is a perfect example of how powerful this technique can really be. Helen was running up the hill toward her favorite jogging path when she noticed a man walking with a large dog. She got the feeling that something wasn’t right. Had Helen ignored the warning signals and continued into the park, the man could have done her harm once they were in a more secluded area. Helen’s acknowledging what was happening caused the man to stop following her and move on. Of course, had the man continued to follow her or make her uncomfortable in any way, she should have immediately called 911. But the fact is, since most crimes are crimes of opportunity, the criminal will most likely go looking for someone else if they know you’ve spotted them.
