REAL LIFE SURVIVAL STORY
Water It Down
In my early 20s, I moved to New York City and lived with my college friend, John. We were young and usually drunk—intoxicated by the big city but also just regular, alcohol drunk. Our diets left a lot to be desired. John seemed to exist on a diet of chicken nuggets and frozen waffles. His healthiest meals usually involved getting unlimited salad and breadsticks from the Olive Garden and bringing a doggie bag home to me. Obviously, I was all about this setup.
One Friday night, our weekend was off to its usual start—drinking at a karaoke bar. A couple of drinks into the night I noticed that John wasn’t drinking anything but water. I was worried about him because, in your early twenties, you tend to think not drinking is a sign of depression. John informed me that he was going on a first date the next day—a first date that involved a hot yoga class. Drinking before hot yoga is like drinking before running a marathon. Was John supposed to decline this invite and prioritize drinking? Of course not. He realized that he wanted to start meeting people with interests outside of bars, and he wanted to experience mornings without a hangover. During the next few months, John steadily built a network of workout buddies outside of dating. My eyes were opened to another way of living, and seeing this lifestyle made it impossible to continue down my unhealthy path. John’s hot yoga date was Eve holding an apple. John and I were two sad, chicken-nugget-loving Adams, suddenly aware that we were totally and completely nude. We were motivated to take a step out of The Garden of Eden and into the world of getting it together.
