CHAPTER TWO
Discovering How to Build Your Business
Now that we understand why so many people get discouraged with network marketing, do not succeed, and leave with a negative attitude, let me lay the foundation for new distributors, distributors who are presently building their business, and successful distributors who want to help their teammates succeed.
When I started with this business model in 1994, there was only a limited supply of reading material available to educate new distributors. The Internet was several years away. We were in the age of the videotape, and the cell phone, at least as we know it today, had not been developed. Because of our more limited means of obtaining information, if a good communication system between a company and team members was not implemented, it was extremely hard for an individual to succeed.
In the years since, things have changed rapidly. Network marketing began to be accepted as a true business model. Books on the subject began to appear. Successful distributors started telling their stories. Entrepreneurs saw a need for how-to books for new network marketers. The videotapes were replaced by easier-to-use CDs, which contained more information at a more reasonable price. The Internet grew up, enabling teams to communicate and disseminate information faster. Finally, the cell phone became a device for all. It allowed distributors to run their businesses from anywhere in the world at any time of day.
Since I was alone in my business at the start, I searched for books to guide me on my journey. As more books started appearing, I made it my duty to read as many as time allowed. This indeed helped me better understand how the business worked. But after reading several shelves of books, I discovered that they basically all taught the same principles within their own personal stories. If a new book came out, I could predict what the author was going to describe. Each book had something unique to add, but the heart of what he wanted to leave the reader with was the same.
The first company I joined was a Japanese company that knew how important personal growth was to a distributor’s success. If you had to ask me what, in all my years in the business, has had the biggest impact on my success, I’d say the programs initiated by that company. From that point on, I judged every company I got involved with and those I investigated by whether any could live up to what I’d been exposed to. None could. I was indeed lucky. Why? Because the heart of network marketing is a person’s ability to grow as an individual in their relationships with themselves, with their friends, and with strangers they want to make part of their team.
Many excellent books on the market can give you the information you need about network marketing and personal growth. To make your learning easier, I’ve divided these books into three categories. The first includes books that strictly give you the steps you need to succeed.
