CHAPTER 12

“The trash department is going to start a recycling business to help save the planet and blackmail people with their papers,” I report as I hand out drinks.

Santanos tilts his head at my news and Gregory and Hassan give me weird looks.

“How did you come across that information?” Santanos asks curiously. “And why haven’t I been told about it?”

“Oh! It’s because me and Dennis and Karl-something all worked it out together when I went for drinks.” I sit on the chair Santanos wants me in and he sits on my lap. “Dennis was throwing away water bottles, so we made a plan for recycling that includes blackmail so it’s evil. Evil recycling.” I’m pretty proud of that.

Gregory makes a weird noise, and Hassan pats him on the back.

“That’s a lovely idea,” Santanos laughs, kissing my cheek. “I’m glad you’re getting along with the minions.”

“I really am. I didn’t know if I could get along with evil people, especially because of being an Augur, but so far the only people who I’ve had magic words about are people who have no love inside them anymore and can’t even hold any love anymore. It’s really sad that they’re like this, but I don’t feel so bad about them being murdered when they’re killing people first, you know?”

Santanos pets me and holds me tight. “I understand, sweetie. It’s sad, but we’re trying to make the world a balanced place, and they’re shifting the balance the wrong way.”

“Exactly—Guilleri Fabian Muir, San Marino, Italy. Three hundred forty-three tourists abducted, one hundred fifty killed, one hundred ninety three ransomed.”

Tears fall down my cheeks, and I hug Santanos close because it’s so sad how many people this person has hurt.

Santanos holds me close and he repeats what I said into a video, and I know he sends it to the depot without having to see. He loves me so he does that even though it’s my job. Sometimes this is a hard job, and I’m really sad and kind of angry that this guy has hurt so many people, but I’m glad that my oppa is going to fix it.

“Oh sweetie. I wish there was something I could do to help,” Santanos whispers.

I scrunch my face up and take a deep breath. “It’s ok. Someone has to be able to tell my oppa where the really bad guys are, and it's ok that it’s me. I don’t mind crying for other people. Someone has to. Everyone should be mourned—that’s what my grandpa told me when the kids at school made fun of me for crying when they killed a little lizard on the sidewalk.”

“Your grandpa sounds like a wise man,” Santanos replies.

“He was very smart,” I agree, taking the hanky in Santanos’ hand and wiping my face with it. “I’m better now. Thank you for telling the depot.”

“You’re welcome, sweetie.”

“If the waterworks are done, can we get back to work?” Gregory demands, waving his big report at us.

Santanos scowls at him. “Unlike you, I haven’t gotten to spend the last fifteen hours with my favorite Augur, and I’m hungry.
