Unlike the cemetery where the twins were hiding, this one was huge and well kept. Rolling hills of gravestones interspersed with trees and the occasional crypt spread out from a wrought iron gated entrance. The roads through the cemetery were clean and smoothly paved, with only a few puddles from a short afternoon shower. Though the cemetery was surrounded by city, the size of it meant very little traffic noise reached her once she and Deacon had moved into the middle of the place.

According to the twins, Greenson called them to an older section of the cemetery where few people went even during the day. Though the gates had been securely locked against car traffic, most of the cemetery wasn’t enclosed behind any fences. Anyone could walk through the gravestones at any time. Which could bring innocent bystanders into the mix. But the area Greenson used for his “sacrifices” was far away from any potential thrill seekers sneaking into the cemetery at night.

At least, Cary hoped so. That’s what the twins had told her. Since she’d already have her hands full with a serial killer, a potential demon, and whoever Greenson had lured here to murder, she really hoped she could trust their information. The fact that she didn’t entirely left her uneasy.

She did wonder how Greenson got his sacrifices and all the demon summoning paraphernalia into the cemetery without being able to drive in. Did he carry all the gear plus a person? That would make him scary strong, but also wouldn’t someone have spotted him hauling a person into the cemetery before now? Or maybe he drugged his sacrifices so they came willingly? For all she knew, he had a wheelbarrow or cart and people mistook him for someone who worked in the cemetery.

As she and Deacon picked their way through the headstones, she decided she really didn’t want to know. The less she knew about how a serial killer worked, the better she’d sleep.

The moon was halfway to full, which helped, but it was still pitch dark inside the grounds. Cary inched around the darker shapes of the gravestones, careful of her steps, wishing she had Deacon’s eyesight. And his ability to move without making any noise. That’d be really handy about now.

As they crept closer to the section they were aiming for, Cary kept her sense open, waiting for her Protector magic to kick in. Her first hint that something was wrong was the quiet. The cemetery was already a quiet place despite the surrounding roads, but the silence that fell over them was almost deafening.

She exchanged a look with Deacon. He was frowning, and the yellow glow in his eyes was stronger now. She swallowed hard. He’d left a backpack with spare clothes in her car, in case he had to shift, which for some reason wasn’t particularly reassuring.

The quiet hum of noise, when it came was almost shockingly loud in the stillness. A chant with words Cary couldn’t hear well enough to identify. But any noise at all felt like a knife in the darkness.
