15. Shrunk Again
After their parents went their respective ways, Jeremy, Devon and Sam went back into the ferry building to get some lunch, all agreeing to try the Mexican restaurant. The smell of black and refried beans and salsa made Jeremyâs mouth water.
Over lunch, they struggled with developing a plan. Devon wanted to check out the cable car turnaround at either Powell street or the Fishermanâs Wharf, convinced that Carl would strike there, grabbing another car when it was empty. Sam wanted to check out the Giantsâ stadium to see or not see the missing Willie Mays statue for himself. Jeremy wanted to stay near the Ferry Building, convinced it was Carlâs next target.
âWhat if we jump on Muni and head down to the stadium?â Sam suggested, leading the way out of the restaurant. âOn the way back we can get close to the Powell Street cable car turnaround, check it out, then head back here.â
âIâm staying here,â Jeremy said defiantly, before following Sam outside. âIâm not going to pretend we can plan exactly when Carlâs going to make his next move. Besides, maybe itâs better if we spread out.â
âAre you kidding?â Devon glared at Jeremy. âThe last time we split up you shrunk so small a bird could have eaten you for lunch.â
Jeremy couldnât help smiling at the bird reference. It was always about birds with Devon. He leaned against the rail separating the walkway from the water.
âStop it,â Devon snapped at Jeremy. âItâs not funny.â
âWhat do ya think, Birdbrain?â Thing asked. âDo you think Jeremy would make a tasty snack?â
âWith or without his clothes on?â Birdbrain giggled.
âWhat? No, we are not talking about this!â Jeremy said indignantly. Sam doubled over laughing, and Devon broke into a grin. âOkay, ha ha,â Jeremy said. âBut can we be done now?â The buddies continued to chuckle.
âI still donât think we should split up,â Devon said.
âI hear you, Devon,â Jeremy said, âbut wandering around the city when thereâs a good chance heâs going to end up here doesnât make sense to me.â
âOkay,â Sam said. âIâll admit. Thereâs nothing to be gained from checking that he took the statue at the ballpark. I donât see why Carl would go back there, anyways.â
âDevon. Remember, he already stole two cable cars. Do you really think heâll try for more?â
âOkay, okay,â she said. âLetâs all stay here. But I donât think you should go small, again. Itâs too risky.â
Jeremy avoided her gaze.
An alarm went off in the Ferry Building. Jeremy spun around and watched as people streamed out of the building. He locked eyes with Devon. She seemed to be pleading with him as she shook her head, but he couldnât resist the impulse to act. Jeremy smiled, shrugged and ran back toward the Ferry Building.
âJeremy, no!â
Jeremy ignored Devon, weaving through business people with their midmorning coffee and confused tourists to get to the doors. He saw security personnel directing people to the exit, and he skirted around them, hiding behind a fruit display. Soon, the building emptied.
