15. Shrunk Again

After their parents went their respective ways, Jeremy, Devon and Sam went back into the ferry building to get some lunch, all agreeing to try the Mexican restaurant. The smell of black and refried beans and salsa made Jeremy’s mouth water.

Over lunch, they struggled with developing a plan. Devon wanted to check out the cable car turnaround at either Powell street or the Fisherman’s Wharf, convinced that Carl would strike there, grabbing another car when it was empty. Sam wanted to check out the Giants’ stadium to see or not see the missing Willie Mays statue for himself. Jeremy wanted to stay near the Ferry Building, convinced it was Carl’s next target.

“What if we jump on Muni and head down to the stadium?” Sam suggested, leading the way out of the restaurant. “On the way back we can get close to the Powell Street cable car turnaround, check it out, then head back here.”

“I’m staying here,” Jeremy said defiantly, before following Sam outside. “I’m not going to pretend we can plan exactly when Carl’s going to make his next move. Besides, maybe it’s better if we spread out.”

“Are you kidding?” Devon glared at Jeremy. “The last time we split up you shrunk so small a bird could have eaten you for lunch.”

Jeremy couldn’t help smiling at the bird reference. It was always about birds with Devon. He leaned against the rail separating the walkway from the water.

“Stop it,” Devon snapped at Jeremy. “It’s not funny.”

“What do ya think, Birdbrain?” Thing asked. “Do you think Jeremy would make a tasty snack?”

“With or without his clothes on?” Birdbrain giggled.

“What? No, we are not talking about this!” Jeremy said indignantly. Sam doubled over laughing, and Devon broke into a grin. “Okay, ha ha,” Jeremy said. “But can we be done now?” The buddies continued to chuckle.

“I still don’t think we should split up,” Devon said.

“I hear you, Devon,” Jeremy said, “but wandering around the city when there’s a good chance he’s going to end up here doesn’t make sense to me.”

“Okay,” Sam said. “I’ll admit. There’s nothing to be gained from checking that he took the statue at the ballpark. I don’t see why Carl would go back there, anyways.”

“Devon. Remember, he already stole two cable cars. Do you really think he’ll try for more?”

“Okay, okay,” she said. “Let’s all stay here. But I don’t think you should go small, again. It’s too risky.”

Jeremy avoided her gaze.

An alarm went off in the Ferry Building. Jeremy spun around and watched as people streamed out of the building. He locked eyes with Devon. She seemed to be pleading with him as she shook her head, but he couldn’t resist the impulse to act. Jeremy smiled, shrugged and ran back toward the Ferry Building.

“Jeremy, no!”

Jeremy ignored Devon, weaving through business people with their midmorning coffee and confused tourists to get to the doors. He saw security personnel directing people to the exit, and he skirted around them, hiding behind a fruit display. Soon, the building emptied.
