Chapter 13 — Cole

Maya had taken up a sentinel spot at the foot of my little girl’s bed, sitting up straight and watching her surroundings with incredible awareness and intelligence, her tail flicking back and forth slowly and rhythmically.

I kissed my daughter on the forehead, and tiptoed out of her bedroom, leaving the door open a crack for Maya to get out easily.

I headed into the living room, and switched on the TV. I watched the screen without actually seeing it, as I tried to work out what, exactly, I was going to tell Maya by way of explanation.

Maybe the truth? I thought to myself, and scoffed a laugh as I realized I was now internally talking to myself.

I couldn't deny that I was right, however. The truth seemed to be the best place from which to start. But where exactly was that starting point? When Morgan first roofied me? Should I even tell her that Morgan had roofied me? Did I have to go into that much detail?

I sat forward and put my elbows on my knees before I scrubbed a hand over my face. I knew I was ready to tell Maya everything, but I just didn't know where to start.

I smelled her before I saw her. She smelled like the flower arrangement I'd bought for her, and warm cat fur. It immediately calmed me down, and the tension I didn't know I was holding in my shoulders disappeared.

“Cole?” she asked. “Are you okay?”

I looked over, and saw her wearing a long t-shirt that was a few sizes too big for her. It was slipping off of her shoulder, giving me a tantalizing glance of her collarbone and smooth, creamy skin. She wasn't wearing any pants, and as she padded soundlessly towards me on her toes, I realized that her inner animal suited her perfectly. Everything she did, from how she walked, to how she stretched, to how she regarded her surroundings — she was exactly like a cat, just human instead of feline.

“I'm fine,” I choked out softly. She had no idea what she was doing, giving me a glimpse of her gorgeous legs as she perched on an armchair directly across from me. I wrestled the tiger back into the cage I kept him in, and tried to keep him in there, but he wasn't going to stay complacent for long. He wanted her, I wanted her, and the line between us was blurring more and more as each tantalizing day with her went past.

“Okay. What do you want to talk about, specifically?” she asked gently, and folded her arms over her chest, causing her perfect breasts to push up a little. I nearly whimpered like a puppy with his tail trapped in a door and my tiger gave a particularly vicious push against the cage he was in.

I cleared my throat. “It's about time I explained myself.”

She cocked her head at me, and narrowed her eyes, regarding me closely. “You don't have to explain anything. You fell out of love with me, if you were even in love with me in the first place, and that's that.
