After that night, the girl made a decision as she was losing herself in an ocean of pearls that poured down from her cheeks.

She decided she could not live on like this.

Could not let others die because of her.

Could not, would not, carry that weight.

She’d had enough.

Of fear. Of pain. Of tears.

Of life.

Keanu is still slightly shaking, and it has nothing to do with the disease eating away at him on the inside.

However, he keeps his pace steady and doesn’t let anything show as he and Leilani follow Sora Mahato out of their apartment after hurriedly getting dressed and locking the door behind them; they’re going to Mai’s. Keanu stays close to Leilani, who is visibly swaying on her feet, as they descend the wooden stairs to the small parking lot in front of the apartment building. She has scrubbed the black tracks of her tears from her cheeks—but nothing can erase them from Keanu’s mind.

Nor can he unhear the bloodcurdling moans of the spirits.

Sora strides over to a motorbike haphazardly parked next to a car. Lit by the pink lanterns overhead, its red shade almost reminds Keanu of blood, although that is not what makes him falter.

No. It’s the vehicle itself, wide tires, sleek and low to the ground, resembling a predator lying in wait.

Coral 700 is its name. It instantly slips into his head.

Just like Tai’s voice, in an unbidden memory: “One day, I will have one of my own,” he said, his eyes bright with an emotion Keanu could not decipher.

Perched at the edge of a rooftop, Keanu nodded to the motorbike they were looking at. “You could just steal this one.” It was the way of the Deep. It was what they had been taught, next to violence.

“No,” Tai said quietly. “When I get one, it will be mine. I will pay the pearls for it myself. And then I will keep on driving and never stop. Away… from all of this.”

His features were strangely soft, not at all what Keanu was used to seeing, and it made him pause, hesitate, freeze in place as it tickled at something in the back of his mind, reminding him of a different world, a different life where and which he used to live, once upon a time.

Before he got stolen.

And it suddenly made him wonder if Tai had been stolen from someone as well.

As Sora heaves a sigh, Keanu blinks and shakes off the memory.

“I can only carry one passenger,” Sora says, lifting his red helmet off the steering wheel and tucking it under his arm.

Keanu sets his jaw. There’s no way in hell he is going to let himself get separated from Leilani. Especially not after what just happened.

“You go to Mai’s on your own,” he says, lifting his chin, “Leilani and I will take the bus.”

But Sora shakes his head. “I’m not letting the Princess out of my sight. It’s too dangerous.”

Leilani startles. “Why?”

Sora looks at her gravely with his one eye, that has taken on a muddled shade in the pink light.
