‘Oh!’ Ben gulped. The thought of Coo’s wonderful ancient woods being torn down filled him with dread and sadness. This was Coo’s home, and Herbert’s too.

‘Finish your drink and come with me!’ said Coo, leaping to her feet and grabbing a harness from a peg by the door.

‘Oh no! That’s not for me again, is it?’

Coo turned and winked. ‘Not this time!’

Just a few moments later, Ben found himself clinging to a little sled, pulled along by Herbert who bounded through the deep snow like a short tubby reindeer.

‘Mush, Herbert! Mush!’ shouted Coo as the sled shot through the forest.

‘Doesn’t he mind?’ said Ben through a mouthful of hair, his face bumping against Coo’s back.

‘Oh, Herb loves it! Look how excited he is!’ said Coo, gripping the reins as Herbert jumped across a narrow ravine, landing with a thump on the far side, his rump wagging like mad.

Ben gripped on tighter. ‘Where are we going anyway?’ he shouted over the wind.

‘We need to find out if the Men in Caps believed what Tench told them,’ said Coo. ‘If we’re lucky, they’ll still just think she’s barmy and ignore her.’

‘And if they believe her?’

‘Then this whole forest is in danger,’ said Coo grimly, ‘and so are you.’

The sled swerved between two enormous black boulders, skidded across a frozen pond and then stopped at the foot of a tree so tall Ben couldn’t see its top branches.
