URBAN EQUIPMENT SETUP

When setting up an urban kit, our number one priority needs to be maneuverability. We want a slim setup that allows us to effectively move in and out of vehicles, the urban environment, and most importantly allows us to effectively utilize our weapons systems. Eye and ear protection are a priority and helmets are value added. The section below will discuss the body armor and pistol belt setup.

BODY ARMOR: When selecting armor, consider using a plate carrier with ceramic plates and ballistic Kevlar backers. Different manufactures will have their ballistic ratings listed. Generally, Level III provides multi-hit protection against 7.62 mm FMJ and is sufficient and economical for our uses. When setting up the fit of the plate carrier, the plate should cover over the sternum, heart and lungs. Balance weight between the front and the back of the carrier so the front does not sag. Sagging armor will can expose the top of the heart and lungs. A radio will be somewhere on your kit that you can grab with both hands. Magazines will be stored in pouches that are closed or open top pouches with retention. Two to four magazines on our kit is sufficient. We will also have a spare mag on our belt and one in our gun. Four full magazines will give 120 rounds 5.56. This is sufficient when you consider we utilize spare mags from vehicles and fighting position before using any on our personal kit. As SOP, no pouches will be over the draw side of your pistol. It is preferable not to have pouches on your off side. Keeping the sides clean is important so nothing inhibits the drawing of your pistol or spare magazines. A tourniquet will be out and attached to your kit in a location that can be grabbed with both hands. A water reservoir will be in a pouch located on the back of your plate carrier. This helps balance out our carrier. Smaller reservoirs (35‐60 ounce) are advised to keep us lite and maneuverable.

PISTOL BELT: Pistol will remain unhindered by any equipment on the draw side of the body. Holster will always have some form of retention for combat operations. On the opposite side of the pistol 2‐3 pistol magazine pouches will be worn. An AR15 ready mag will be directly behind the pistol pouches. The ready mag will be your primary magazine for rifle reloads. This allows you to have a rifle mag at times you have only your pistol belt on and is faster than pulling a spare AR15 magazine from your kit. A nice to have item is a dump pouch worn behind your ready mag for spent magazines that you may occur. Your IFAK should be worn as a fanny pack and adjusted to fit comfortably with your pistol belt either in the front or back. Wearing in the front makes it easily assessable while wearing it to the rear allows lumbar support in mounted situations.

Somewhere on your kit a red chemlight will be worn.
