CHAPTER THIRTEEN

The library was closed at this time of night, but Stephen was hardly surprised to discover that it didn’t matter. As they approached, the door opened all by itself.

Or not. Stephen felt the same breeze he’d felt the other day float over them as they entered the quiet, dark library. “The Unseen Guardians?” he asked.

“Yes,” Sofia whispered.

The soft wind buffeted them toward the cabinet. The Unseen Guardians wafted ahead and swirled around them as they laid their palms on the door. Then it opened and they walked inside.

The cabinet was exactly as it had been the day before. “No opening or closing hours,” Sofia said, apparently guessing Stephen’s line of thinking.

The treasures on pedestals and open books and strange objects were all in place. As was the Docent. It waited for them at the end of the hallway, hovering there, blue and purple and wispy and worried.

“You do not have to take an item,” the Docent said. “You could leave this place.”

Ivan still hadn’t spoken.

“But then Bek would be stone forever,” Stephen said.

“And Hakor, too,” Ivan said. “We are doing what we must. Please bring me the Sundial of Ineb-hedj.”

The wind gusted around them, but gently. Maybe the Unseen Guardians approved of their plan. The Docent continued to watch them. “I see your decision is made, all three of you. You must be careful,” it said. “And do not stay too long in the past.”

“We won’t,” Stephen said. “We have to get back before Edmund finishes his spell.”

The Docent moved nearer. “The sundial will take you where you are meant to be.” The moment Stephen started to ask how the Docent could know, it said, “All will be clear eventually.”

Sofia clasped her hands in front of her and spoke to the Docent. “I don’t suppose you could loan me some weapons. We were in such a rush to get here, I forgot to bring my sword.”

“That is not within my power, I fear,” the Docent said. “But I wish you luck.”

Sofia nodded, as if accepting a great gift.

Of course. All they had was the clothes on their backs. For Stephen that meant jeans and a T-shirt, and in his pockets, a small notebook, a piece of charcoal and a pencil, his wallet and phone (no service in ancient times, he was betting). For Sofia, it was a dress, leggings, and her boots. Plus her decaled nails. And of course, for Ivan it meant whatever was stashed in his secret pockets.

“Ivan, you have plenty of useful things secreted in your pockets, right?” Stephen asked.

“A few,” he said. “Well, about twenty. The compass, some items collected or invented by my ancestors.”

“That’s good at least,” Stephen said, and Sofia nodded agreement.
