The test kitchen was every cook’s dream. Even with three women and one man using it, they didn’t bump into each other often, because of the many sinks, stove-tops and multiple ovens. Stainless steel gleamed from corner to cabinet, from refrigerator to granite counter. Angela simply loved kitchens. She felt useful in them and, for the most part, in control and totally immersed in whatever she did. Today she tried to forget she was in the running for the prize—a cooking spot on The Breakfast Show. She told herself she was making her chocolate rum torte simply for company—Megan, Greg and her neighbors.

David, too? a curious little voice asked.

She was trying not to think of David today, just as she was trying not to think of the judges who would decide if her torte was the best dessert.

As she kept an eagle eye on her chocolate melting in a double boiler, a woman dressed in jeans with little candy canes embroidered on them and a red-and-white-striped shirt heard a beep coming from her pocket. Taking a little silver phone from there, Linda Zahn stopped grating the carrots that were one of the ingredients in her pineapple carrot cake with cream cheese icing. As soon as Angela had heard about the recipe, she knew this woman would be giving her a run for that TV spot. She seemed to be about Angela’s age, maybe younger. It was hard to tell. But she wore her wavy, black hair tied back in a ponytail and was constantly pushing her rimless glasses higher on her nose.

One of the other contestants was running a mixer, so Angela didn’t hear any of Linda’s conversation. Yet, when she took the chocolate off the burner to cool and saw her close her phone, she realized the woman was crying. Linda searched in her pocket for a tissue and came up empty.

Grabbing one from her own pocket, Angela handed it to her. “Are you okay?”

The mixer suddenly stopped, and Christmas carols piped in on an overhead speaker camouflaged their voices. “I’ve never been away from my husband before. We’ve been married three years. We just had a baby six months ago and I miss them both so much.”

“Where do you live?” Angela asked.

“Ohio. I flew in yesterday and stayed in a hotel last night.”

Angela didn’t know if she was stepping into a minefield asking questions, but she did anyway. “Do you wish you hadn’t come?”

“Oh, no. We knew this would be a big adventure for me. Both of us couldn’t afford to come, and I just didn’t want to travel with the baby. I was a little worried about John taking care of her, but he says he’s doing okay.”

“You trust him with her?”

“Oh, yes. He’s helped me since the day she was born. We alternate getting up at night. He’s taking vacation days today and tomorrow.”

What Linda had told Angela astonished her. “You take turns getting up with the baby?” She simply had never known a man on earth who had done that.
