None of that stopped Coach Lindsay from holding class outdoors. “Builds character,” he said.

Even the sick kids were outside for Powers & Ethics. They huddled together in their own separate cluster, too cold to socialize or even make eye contact with anyone else.

“Maybe I should go pick another fight with Dexter,” I said, defeated.

“Or his sister,” Penny said. “Can’t believe nobody got a video of that. Like, nobody.”

“Dude, you’ll get it,” Noah said. “Just keep trying.”

“I’ve been trying for the last two weeks!” I said.

“It happened once; it’ll happen again,” Jordan said, steam rising from the empty space under his beanie. “Just chill and be patient.”

“You should try jumping off the top of the academy,” Penny suggested. “Wait, I’m joking. Knowing you, you’d actually do it.”

Coach Lindsay walked up to our little huddle, his whistle hanging from his mouth. “Ben, you still having trouble with the whole flying thing?”

I nodded.

“Jordan made a good point,” Lindsay said. “You might be concentrating too much. You’ve tried stress. Have you tried to relax?”

Maybe Coach Lindsay and Jordan were right.

“Close your eyes and try meditating,” Lindsay said. “You’d be surprised at what you can accomplish when you shut your face.”

My friends looked at me, hopeful. I closed my eyes and concentrated on the blood vessels behind the lids.

Deep breath in.

Deep breath out.

In my mind, I floated higher and higher into the air, through the clouds, the atmosphere, and then into space. The stars twinkled like they were cheering.

My shoulders and arms felt heavy. My head tilted back as my neck muscles loosened.

I heard Penny squeak, and I knew something was happening. I kept my eyes shut, hoping to keep calm and make it last.
