Chapter Fourteen

Susan watched Christine carefully as they walked toward the little supermarket on the corner. Christine kept her head down and her shoulders rolled forward, no longer looking like the stoic and beautiful New Yorker who had arrived on the ferry earlier that day.

The market was totally updated from the last time either of them had been there. Back in the old days, there had been a little ice cream and coffee area at the front, with little diner-like tables and chairs with a beautiful view of the street for people watching. Now, the store had grown bigger, and they’d blotted out the little ice cream area for a variety of beer and wine. Without speaking, Christine headed toward the wine section and placed several bottles into a basket that hung off her elbow. When she turned to see Susan’s incredulous look, she shrugged and said, “We’re going to have loads of people over for dinner tonight. They’re going to want to drink.”

Susan knew she was right. She grabbed a cart of her own and added crates of beer before heading into the deeper sections of the store to grab meat for burgers, slices of cheese, burger buns, bags of chips, watermelon, and potato salad. It wasn’t the kind of thing she would have made her family back at home—at least, not in the past few years—but it was the kind of fare she'd grown up with. She knew her family would find comfort in it.

Christine and Susan checked out. Christine half-reached for her purse, but Susan waved her hand. “I’ve got it.” They collected the bags at the end of the check-out line and then headed back into the sun. With all the bottles of wine and crates of beer, Susan knew they would need some kind of vehicle.

“Do you mind if I just run back to the Inn and grab another car?” she asked.

Christine looked disgruntled. “What if someone sees me out here?”

“Who is going to see you?”

“I don’t know. The entire town is a gossip trap,” Christine returned.

“I’m pretty sure people knew you were coming because of Dad,” Susan said. “And the entire island didn’t stop because of it. Look.” She nodded toward the glittering downtown of Oak Bluffs, swirling with tourists and locals alike, all with light smiles and bright eyes.

“Fine,” Christine grumbled. “Just hurry.”

Susan was back in five minutes. Christine reported that only one person had spotted her and recognized her. “My English teacher, Mrs. Robinson—who looks fantastic, by the way. It’s really like time stopped for her. I’m so jealous.”

“Oh! I forgot about her,” Susan said. She cranked the engine and turned the car toward the exit of the parking lot. As they drove, however, Zach Walters burst out from the sidewalk and waved his hands. He wore his chef uniform, without the hat, and his blue eyes were bright and warm.

“Is that...” Christine muttered ominously.

Susan yanked down the window. “Hey, Zach! What’s up?”

Zach leaned down to speak through the window. “Hey, Susie! I just had to run to the store to grab a few extra ingredients.
