We talk late into the night, Shoa and Cora snoring lightly through their gills. I steer away from talk of Lukas, instead asking about Finn’s upbringing in the Sunken City, including his official appointment to the King’s court.

“Everyone must have been so envious of you,” I say.

Finn only shrugs. “Maybe. To be honest, it was mostly a burden at first. No one wanted to be my friend anymore. They all worried I would rat out their wrongdoings to the court.”

“Would you have?”

He smiles. “Probably.”

Our hands stay twined together.

“But not now,” I say. I mean—I always see you with those guys at the Mariner.”

“Eventually, I joined my band. Made new friends.”

“Your band?” I tilt my head. “Like—band of thugs?”

Finn laughs. It’s a warm, open sound—one I don’t hear too often. “No, no. A musical band. As in, a group of people who play instruments together.”

“Wait.” I tug up a handful of grass. “You play an instrument?”

“And sing.”

“Get out.” I push myself up onto both knees. “Sing for me.”

“Absolutely not.”

“Come on!” I throw the handful of grass into his face. He bats it away, laughing. “That is so not fair. You do not get to drop something like, I’m a musical genius, and not at least give me a sample.”

“I never said I’m a musical genius.” Finn’s cheeks are pink, but I can tell he’s pleased. “But I’ll tell you what—we’re having a concert this Friday at the Trench. Why don’t you come and bring the girls?”

“Big yes.” I smile. He smiles back.

We fall quiet. At the same moment, we both realize that we’re just sitting there, smiling at each other, and look quickly away.

“So.” I clear my throat, searching for a change of subject. “Do you… do you think Lukas did it? Became mchawi?”

Finn’s face falls. He looks back out the dome, gaze drifting away. “If he did,” he says, “Goddesses help us all.”
