Around ten the next night, I walked out the front door of the Salinas Rural Legal Assistance office. Two guys were leaning against the driver’s side of my VW bus.

“Pardon me,” I said as I pulled out my keys.

“Hold yer horses, punk. We wanna talk to you.”

Surprised, I looked up into the stony steel-gray eyes of a muscular man in his mid-twenties. “What?” I asked in a bewildered tone.

“I said we want to talk to you,” repeated one of the skinheads, rubbing his knuckles.

“What’a ya want?” I managed to ask firmly, as if unaffected by the churning fear swelling inside me.

“Don’t fuck with us,” growled the butch-cut blond.

“What?” I responded.

“You don’t know shit about farming. You’re a lawyer. Don’t try to tell us how to grow the crops. Stick to your books. We’ll handle the fields.”

“What’re you talking about?”

“Don’t fuck with us, dude,” said the shorter man, pushing my shoulder, knocking me against the side of the bus. “You heard my buddy. You do and you’re dead.”

Abruptly, the two walked to a pickup and pulled away.

Like a teen who does the opposite of what his mother says, the bullies’ effort to abort my desire to ban the short-handled hoe had the opposite effect.
