Chapter 24

My arms shook, and I rubbed the gold wrist guards further into my skin. Dad sat next to me on the cot in my cell, and silence filled the space between us. My mind was on a continuous loop of the past few minutes. Shadows had been in the arena, but then they disappeared. How could that be?

Kipp and Ben appeared on the other side of the iron bars.

“What happened?” Kipp looked first at me and then to my father.

“She lost focus. It was like she wasn’t looking at us but through us at first, and then she was back. She’s frightened. I don’t know what happened, but the only thing that she said was ‘Shadows’.”

“Did her eyes change?”

“I didn’t see. I was on the other side of the arena.”

Kipp looked to Ben. “Did they change?”

He shook his head. “No, I have been watching for that as you instructed. There was no change. No darkness in her eyes. Like Caleb said, they were only unfocused.”

“Caleb, go to Jenna. Tell her what happened.”

My father wrapped his arm around my shoulders and squeezed gently before rising to leave. I stared at my wrist guards. The gold was enough to keep the Shadows at bay, mostly. Lifting my head, I locked eyes with Kipp. “I thought you said that they couldn’t get through your wards. I have gold attached to me. How did they get through?”

“I’m not sure. We’ll figure this out, Samara.”

Ben was watching me with his arms across his chest.

“This isn’t your fault, Ben.”

“Kinda feels like it is.”

“I…”

The ground and the walls vibrated, and a distant thud rang ominously in the prison. The tremors came again, and my mind unfroze, recognizing this magic. I grabbed Kipp’s arm. “The King. He’s here. This is what happened in New Orleans right before he arrived.”

Kipp moved instantly, calling out to Ben as he ran. “Stay with her. Do not let her out of your sight.”

The ground continued to hum with the magic that assaulted the Capitol—the minutes dragged on like hours. The walls shook and trembled before they stilled. Then another onslaught would arrive. Fear clogged my throat, and my current predicament felt similar to that of a caged animal awaiting the slaughter. The door at the end of the corridor swung open, and I was relieved to find my father walking toward us.

“Ben, we’re going back to the arena. Want to join?”

“Dad, what’s happening?”

“The Dragon King isn’t here. It was only a small raid. I want to get you back in the arena. There’s something strange about how the Shadows came to you, and I need to see it again if they appear.”

My breath stilled in my chest, and my arms came across my waist without my consent. Dad’s hand came to my shoulder and my breathing restarted. “Samara, let’s find out what the Shadows are doing to you; then, we can find a way to stop it.”

I nodded and followed the two men back to the training arena. There were fewer guards this time.
