Marriage is the most intimate relationship between two strangers and it is a natural ground for the cultivation of spirituality in tandem if both parties enter the marriage with the same awe as when entering a house of worship. The common reasons that some people get married—sexual passion, the need for security, the thing to do—provide neither lasting relationships nor lasting happiness. Passion especially is a feverish sedition of the mind against the spirit. As soon as the novelty wears off or passionate needs decline, the issues of living with someone and the conflicts emanating from spousal demands and failing expectations stir up ambivalence about each other and marriage itself.

However, if you accept the marriage as a spiritual partnership, it will last forever; even death won’t keep you apart. There is no novelty that will wear off, no need that will decline. In a spiritual marriage, whether there is love at first sight or not, there will be love at all subsequent sights. As time goes by, spiritual marriage brings further density to a couple’s love; in the last sight they confirm each other’s everlasting faith.
