Each day, Sunitha updates Bindu on Ajjiâs health, having liaised with the doctor on her behalf. Bindu, while grateful to Sunitha, is saddened and frustrated that she must rely on her friend for this, while sheâs forced to spend her time pasting a smile on her face and nodding along to the inane conversation and catty gossip of bored socialites. She visits Ajji when she can, but the brief snatches of precious time with her grandmother are never enough. Ajji is getting better, but she isnât out of the woods yet. Sheâs still very weak and confused. Once or twice she has smiled at Bindu, the gleam of love in her cloudy gaze, but before Bindu could make conversation, Ajjiâs eyes had closed and sheâd fallen back asleep.
The doctor, a thin, unprepossessing white man not much taller than Bindu, who nevertheless performs miracles, promises: âYour grandmother will get better, but, mind you, she has several complications â not just as a result of this illness, but also due to long-term starvation â which need to be dealt with.â
Long-term starvation. Oh, Ajji. Her grandmother going without so Bindu could eat, grow. Her grandmother sacrificing her own health for her grandchildâs well-being.
âSheâll need ongoing medical care,â the doctor warned.
And Bindu marvelled that she didnât have to think twice about agreeing. Selling her soul and losing her freedom by marrying the landlordâs son had paid off if it meant Ajji was guaranteed medical care for as long as she needed it.
