ONLY THE DIEHARDS BOTHERED VISITING THE TIKI bar before noon. Hali served food at the patio tables through the resort’s kitchen, but most people preferred eating inside because of the heat and humidity. The quiet allowed her to gather her thoughts and prepare for the day. That quiet was interrupted today when a familiar face plopped down on one of the stools and fixed her with an amused look.

“I would like something frilly,” Rusty announced as she turned to face him. “My brother isn’t here to mock me, so I want something with a bunch of fruit and an umbrella. If it happens to be blue, I’m not going to complain.”

Hali didn’t jump to action. “What are you doing here?”

“Can’t a guy just want to hang out with his brother’s girlfriend?”

“No.” The way Hali’s nose wrinkled told Rusty she thought that was the most absurd thing she’d ever heard. “Did your brother send you here?”

“I’m not answering that.”

“Because he told you to keep it from me?”

“Because I’m afraid you’ll hex my private parts and that’s going to seriously ruin my game. Since I’m vapid, all I have is my game and that would be the equivalent of you essentially ruining my life.”

Hali didn’t want to laugh—it would only encourage him after all—but she couldn’t help herself. “You are unbelievable.”

“I try,” he agreed on a grin. When he sobered, there was something else flashing in the depths of his eyes that Hali couldn’t quite make out. “Gray just wanted me to stop in,” he admitted after several seconds. “He knew I was going to be in the area, and after what happened on the beach yesterday, he’s wound a little tight.”

“He needs to let it go.” Hali was adamant. “I can take care of myself. Even if your father hadn’t rushed in like a superhero, I would’ve protected myself.”

“He knows that. He can’t help that you twist up his insides like gum in hair.”

Hali wrinkled her nose. “That is a disgusting comparison.”

Rusty chuckled. “He adores you, Hali. He can’t lose you. He’s lost so many other things in his life, but you’re the thing that will cripple him to lose. You need to give him a bit of space to operate right now. Between our parents coming back into his life and you potentially getting hurt, his heart and head are messes.”

Hali had come to that conclusion herself. “Do you think your parents are going to hurt him again?”

“Are you worried about that?”

“I’m the one who manipulated him into giving them a second chance.”

“No, you manipulated him into a breakfast with them,” Rusty clarified. “That’s different. Dad swooping in like he did yesterday is what convinced him to give them a second chance.”

“But … what if they disappoint him again?”

“They’re going to.”

“How can you know that?”

“Because they’re Harlan and Helene. They don’t know how to do anything but disappoint us.”

“So, you think they’re going to hurt Gray again,” Hali surmised. “I don’t like that.”

Rusty chuckled. “I think that they’re going to be true to themselves, and Gray will have a decision to make.
