CHAPTER 17

TREE TURNED BONNER TOWARD THE Rolling J. Bonner didn’t pay Sister much mind as they loped along, periodically slowing to a trot and then back to a walk. He wanted to visit with Cedar Jones in private and then the boys if he could. He also wanted to provision up and trade Sister’s riding saddle for a packsaddle. There were several smell teepee tents in the barn just big enough for one man and his bedroll that would at least keep the wind and rain off of his back and keep him warm.

Cedar Jones saw Tree ride up to the main ranch house and tie the horses.

“I see you are leading Sheriff Brody’s horse. Did he make it?” “

Well, he is kind of alive and talking. The doctor got that spike out of him. I helped him a little. Didn’t want to pull out. He had to cauterize it with a hot rod to stop the bleeding. Going to be a while getting on his feet.”

Tree took out the badge from his front pocket.

“Sheriff Brody wants me to go after Gato Montes and his band. Says he heard him say they was heading to Mushaway right before one of them put a spike in him.”

“He put a badge on you? What about the ranch and Mr. Gillstrap? Mushaway is a damn pretty good piece from Rosario, as I recall. That badge does not mean piss up that way, Tree. You know that. Especially to them Comancheros we ran into. We whipped that bunch, but we had numbers on our side. Seven of them, as I recall. I reckon they are still there trading with that band of Comanche Quahadis. Not a real good spot for a gringo with a red beard to go riding off into. You certainly are not the person you were on that day. You have become a true leader. Even I look up to you. But I can still outshoot you, and you know it. You need me along.”

“Well, all things considered, I didn’t have much of a choice, I reckon. Him, laying there nearly dead and all. Said he didn’t have no one else, and I was just postponing my promise to Mr. Gillstrap for a little while. That’s all.”

“No choice? You always got a choice, Tree. Some choices are just better than others. I reckon you are probably even wanting a scrap with that killer and that band of his. If you get kilt, how are you going to keep your promise to Mr. Gillstrap? Ever thought of that? I would end up having to keep a promise you made if you get killed by this bunch or maybe the Comanches.

“I know you better than anyone on this here ranch knows you. The boys don’t even know we served together for five years in the cavalry because we have never even told them we knew each other in the past. I know what happens when that damn red-haired temper comes out when you really get riled.
