Chapter Nine

Jillie and Griff drove into the red rock scenery of Sedona, Arizona. Awed, Jillie stared at the magnificent configurations of geological formations that formed the impressive landscape before impulsively turning to Griff and bubbling, “Isn’t this the most gorgeous place you’ve ever seen?”

Griff cocked an eyebrow, “You’ve decided to speak to me now?”

Joy leaving her face, Jillie snapped, “I’ve been speaking to you ever since we left California.”

“Oh, that’s right. Let’s see... you said, ‘Turn here; stop there; don’t go so slow; don’t go so fast; let me drive; you’re going to hit that sign if you don’t move to the left; roll the window down; I’m hungry; I have to go to the bathroom.’”

Jillie scowled. “What did you do, count?”

Griff sent her a sideways look. “I am always thorough. When I start something, I finish it.”

A small thrill ran through Jillie as a picture of Griff making love to her intruded and attached itself to his last statement as vividly as if it were happening this minute. She peered at him and, upon seeing a small, satisfied smile, decided murder was too good for him. She’d be damned if she’d let this interfering cowboy, cameraman, agent, or whatever he really was, ride roughshod over her—an unfortunate choice of words since the thought of him doing exactly that followed immediately. She pretended unconcern, refocusing the conversation on official business instead of the personal. “NAS will be glad to hear that.”

Griff chuckled under his breath, but didn’t reply. He just adjusted his position behind the wheel, appearing more relaxed than he had since they’d left California.

The silence between them built again until Jillie couldn’t stand it anymore. “Strange to think of Nigel living in this area, isn’t it?”

Griff sent her a casual glance. “Why?”

“I picture him among bright city lights, not stuck in the middle of the Southwest. Although Sedona and its surroundings are very sophisticated, artistic and wealthy. For a collector, maybe it makes sense after all.”

“There’s one thing you forgot.”

“What’s that?”

“The spiritual connection. Sedona was the center of a spiritual new age movement some time ago, but the mystical activity goes back to ancient times. Close your eyes.”

Willing to humor him, Jillie closed her eyes as Griff continued, his voice low, hypnotic. “Let everything go. Let the energy in. It’s everywhere. It’s in the surrounding red rocks and the evergreens. You can almost see the energy in the air. People come here to heal and explore their inner lives.” He turned on the blinker.

At the clicking sound Jillie’s eyes popped open. She sent him a questioning look as he turned into a deserted scenic byway and stopped the car. “We’re playing tourists now?”

“Not exactly.” Griff indicated the landscape. “Open your mind, Jillie. Can’t you feel it?”

She lowered her window and sat for a moment, but it was no good. She felt closed in sitting in the car. Jillie opened the door to better view the majestic beauty of the brilliant autumn vista surrounding her. Carefully she picked her way across the sandy ground, climbing into the rocks.
