We are learning that we can afford to do better than warehouse those who need care. In fact, in a condition of abundance, we will create more and more industries in which children and elders have more meaningful social interactions—some crossing age divides as well as false categories such as “retirement” and “school age.”

Eldercare and childcare are, of course, growing industries, but they remain in many respects trapped in old ways of thinking. As people remain healthy and active into their golden years, they will want to undertake more than shuffleboard and early-bird specials. They’ll want to work, play, and contribute to society meaningfully.
