Chapter 17
Jainen stalked down the hall like the cold specter of death. She was livid. She wasnât sure why exactly. She just was.
Kai had no idea what he was talking about. He NEVER had any idea what he was talking about. Heâd just open his mouth and words would fall out. Like an avalanche of stupidity; trapping the unwary under the crushing weight of his idiocy.
â¦AND to top it all off, now she was down a pair of underwear thanks to him. Bastard.
She scowled.
Aggravating handsome little goody-two shoes...
âNow hold onâ¦â The idiot in question ran down the hall after her. âCome on! Hold up a second, Jainen.â He grabbed her arm. âPlease.â
She yanked her arm away roughly and turned around to face him, her other arm reflexivity coming up to use the staff in attack.
He held his hands up to show he wanted peace and not a fight. âWait, wait. Hold on. I just want to talk.â He looked up at her in confusion. âSo, what was that about in there?â
She glared at him. âThat? Oh that was just the man I thought was my friend and houseguest telling me I should be nice to my potential killers.â She threw her arms wide, gesturing to the halls around them. âSee this, Kai? This Palace is my world now. It and Bae all I have left. Thatâs it. So, when people charge in here attacking it, I get a little upset. And now youâre telling me I should just sit back and let them do what they want to it. To me.â
Kai looked thoughtful for a minute. âThatâs not what I said at all, and you know it. Besides, if this is all you have left, isnât that all the more reason to try not to deliberately antagonize people who come to your door? Why not see if you canât win them over to your side, instead of just acting under the assumption that they wouldnât understand? Thereâs no need to fight if you donât have to, you could get hurt.â
She gave a cold humorless laugh. âOh please, you think I canât handle guys like that?â She laughed again. âI can and HAVE dealt with three times that number of people. More. In case it might have escaped your limited attention to detail, my family is pretty fucking hard to kill. Even without the staff and powers, I am more than capable of taking care of myself. Between Bae and my father, Iâve been taught more about fighting and defense than I could ever possibly use, no matter how many lunatics show up. And Iâm strong enough that I could have juggled them if I wanted to.â
He shook his head. âWell then what are you complaining about? You canât have it both ways. You canât say that you need to protect your house, and with the same breath say that thereâs nothing they can possibly do to hurt you.â
She glared at him. âWatch me.â
She turned and stalked off again. He raced to catch up.
