Chapter 22

For Logan, the next few days were wonderfully normal, with hours spent playing Zombie Hunter and reading Castle Dread graphic novels. He didn’t even mind mowing the lawn and helping his dad cook dinner.

He’d just finished a breakfast of frozen waffles topped with strawberry jam and whipped cream when he got a text from Teo.

Wanna hang out?

Logan texted back: K. See you in 15.

Teo was hunched over her computer when he walked into her room. “Hey,” she said without turning around.

Logan glanced over her shoulder at a strange image on her screen. It looked like a demented chimpanzee with a weird beak and glowing green eyes.

“What the heck is that?”

“It’s called a snatcher,” Teo said excitedly. “They’re listed in this article on mythological creatures.”

“And you’re reading about them why?”

“They’re called snatchers because they steal babies!”

Logan gave Teo a hard look. “We’ve struck out twice. Three times if you count the hospital. I thought we were done with the whole baby thing?”

“You were. I couldn’t stop thinking about it. I’ve been doing more research, and last night I found this!”

Logan ran a hand through his thick blond hair. “You are seriously exhausting me here. What about the Kinderhaken?”

“I read yesterday that its hands and feet are like a human’s—no claws. The print we found had claw marks, so that rules out the Kinderhaken.”

Logan glanced back at the creature on the screen. “So you think the Dankworths’ baby was taken by a creepy imaginary monkey?”

“Don’t judge me for having an open mind.”

“Open? I think your brain just fell out.”

“Whatever. The woman who wrote this article also wrote a book on monster lore, and there’s a whole chapter on snatchers.” She closed her laptop. “Up for a trip to Banshee?”
