âAriella,â Jack says, âthereâs something I should tell you.â
Heâs sitting opposite me at the table and Ginny is sitting next to him. There are two baking dishes between us. One holds the spatchcock, overly brown on the top and ghostly white on the bottom. The other dish is smaller, filled with roast vegetables.
âMy vegetables look like pebbles in a bog, donât they? I shouldnât have poured the gravy over them.â
He flashes perfect white teeth. âNo, itâs something else.â
âIs this a guessing game?â Ginny says. âMy turn. Youâve never eaten two-tone baby chickens before?â
âTheyâre not babies!â I say. âTheyâre just small. Theyâre meant to be like that.â
Ginny takes a napkin and picks up the dish, tipping it on an angle so the juices, a suspicious shade of pink, run into the corner.
âTheyâre not cooked through,â she says.
âCan you get salmonella poisoning from spatchcock?â
âSure can,â she says, taking the dish to the kitchen bench. âBut the vegetables are okay, theyâre cooked to a crisp.â When she stabs one with a fork, Jack puts his hand out.
âWere the vegetables roasted with the spatchcock?â he says. âIf theyâre out of the same pan it might not be safe toââ
âAll right!â I take a deep breath. âIâll get rid of them too.â I pick up the dish with unsteady hands and take it to the kitchen, spilling gravy down my front when I put it on the bench. I wipe my shirt with my napkin as I sit at the table again. âWeâll have a healthy salad dinner instead.â
Ginny smiles encouragingly as she passes the potato salad to Jack. âThis is perfectly safe. Mum grew and cooked the potatoes, and Dad smoked the bacon.â
He opens his mouth and shuts it again. He passes it back to Ginny. âI canât eat it.â
âWhy not?â
He pulls his own salad towards his plate, carefully scooping out leaves, tomato and feta. âIâm a vegetarian.â
When Ginny chokes, he thumps her back, then tops up her water and hands it to her. She splutters and coughs.
âCan you repeat that, please,â I say.
âItâs not usually a problem. I eat fish sometimes andââ
âI donât have any fish!â
Ginny grimaces. âI guess the vegetables were ruled out by the gravy as well as the salmonella.â
Jack concentrates hard on chewing a sliver of carrot. âIâm not that hungry.â
âWhy not?â I slam my knife and fork on my plate. âDid the lettuce leaf you had for lunch fill you up? How many horses did you shoe today?â
âJust a few. I was out at Mandy Flanaganâs place.â
âTrimming her five million Welsh mountain ponies?â
He shrugs.
Ginny scoops up leaves from Jackâs salad bowl. She selects a piece of cucumber and rummages for more. I pull the bowl away and return it to Jack.
âLeave it for him if thatâs all he eats.â
He puts down his fork. âIâm sorry, Ariella.â
âHow do you look like â¦â I wave my hand around. How does he maintain his physique? Is that what Iâm asking? âWhy didnât you tell me?â
âYou said you were going to cook macaroni cheese.
