Kazak hosts at Lake of Heaven

The lake was formed long ago by landslides that blocked the only side not hemmed in by the Tienshan Mountains. Then, five years before we visited, the Chinese built a road to the lake, and it was now a tourist destination. Despite the daily arrival of a few hundred day-trippers, the slopes around the lake still belong to the Kazaks, who have been grazing their sheep here during the summer for hundreds, if not thousands, of years. The grazing rights around the lake were shared by five extended families, and to supplement their income they started renting out yurts to the handful of visitors who stayed past sundown. The fee was a modest 10RMB, or $2, per night. They also took visitors on horseback rides for ten bucks a day. That sounded like a good idea, and Finn and I went to sleep dreaming of life on horseback with the wind blowing in our beards.
