Chapter Eleven

Charles Bivens

On the car ride home from Melissa’s school, I had called Clifton and let him know we needed to spend some father-son time together. He was the one who’d reminded me of the game coming on. He was a sports fanatic but, like me, not a player. We both were avid spectators.

In between watching the game and talking about the plays and the players, my mind kept wandering to Mary, which was very different from what it normally wandered to. I was usually caught up in my thoughts about how Kandace let me bend her over my desk at work, or how China White bounced up and down in my lap at the club. Mary had not given me a reason to give her a second look in a long time, let alone a lingering thought hours afterward.

When the game went off, I stopped Clifton from going upstairs so we could talk. I didn’t want to lose my grip on him like I had his sister; plus, I wanted to manipulate him into telling me about his sister. They fought like every other set of siblings, but they had a great relationship. Mary did a great job of making sure of that, and I was grateful. The two of them were from my genes, and they were all I had, which was why I could not let the shit I’d had going on in my life make me fuck up theirs. Melissa had never defied me, or her mom, to my knowledge, like she had been doing since Mary and I fell out. I was an engineer, so it was my job to figure out patterns, consistency, and outcomes.

We talked about the girls who were checking for him, his plans for college and where he wanted to go, and what he might’ve wanted to major in. For every question that I had, he gave a sound answer. It appeared like he had his head on straight and was on the right path.

“So, what’s going on with your sister and this Javion boy?” I bluntly asked out of nowhere.

“Man, Dad. I don’t know. I met the cat like twice and wasn’t really feeling him. He seemed a little weird, but I shook it off because I have not cared for any of her boyfriends.”

“Well, don’t shake that feeling off. Learn to trust your intuition in everything that you do. Your feelings about that boy were probably dead on. I met him today and wasn’t impressed. He’s disrespectful to be all in her room sleeping with her but hasn’t come over here to properly introduce himself to me and your mom.”

“Ugh, Dad. I do not want to think about Melissa doing it with some boy.” Clifton was grossed out.

“I get that. If it were me, she’d be celibate until I picked her husband. But since I can’t, I need you to do me a favor and watch out for her. Now that you have that car, pop in on her at school randomly.
