Chapter Ten

“Another year older, Gypsy. I suppose I shouldn’t complain to you. At least I can be grateful I don’t add seven years to my age each birthday like you. Sorry, girl.” Tori smiled at the dog lying patiently at the foot of the bed, watching Tori. “It’d be nice to be home today. You’d be enjoying your yard and digging up the bones you just buried that you thought I didn’t see you sneak out of the garbage in the kitchen last time we were there.” Did the dog look guilty? Tori shook her head. “And I’d be enjoying a nice fire in the fireplace…” And then her mind drifted off to a certain lawman and she wondered if he even remembered what the day was. In the past, he had always tried to make it special for her. In the past…

“The judges are beginning to make their way through the pens,” Trey’s voice came down the hallway of the trailer. Tori had heard him open the door, but she knew he was simply standing outside and had stuck his head inside and yelled for her.

It had a highlighted western yoke with the striping going in horizontal lines instead of vertical like the majority of the shirt. Shiny buttons were at the cuffs and down the front of the shirt.

The hand-tooled black leather belt with its gold buckle matched the black boots she had purchased earlier, also. She had drawn her hair back and caught it at the nape of her neck. The new black Resistol hat was also new. She had read that image and branding went hand in hand. And it was time she had a different image. All the hours alone on the road getting to Colorado, had given her time to think about a lot of things.

It had been Gray’s fault that she had finally looked long and hard in the mirror the night he had rescued her from the side of the road on her disastrous date. He said she was a mixture…tomboy and lady…and all Tori. And she needed to be just that. Maybe it was time she allowed
