Diabetes

Diabetes and memory loss are closely linked. Memory function can be acutely affected in hypoglycaemic attacks (a hypo) when blood sugar levels drop too low and the brain does not get enough glucose to function effectively. There is too little fuel to enable the brain cells (neurons) to effectively communicate with each other and so one by one, the cognitive systems start to shut down. If blood sugars are not normalized, the person may eventually slip into a coma. Poorly controlled diabetes with perpetually high levels of blood sugar (hyperglycaemia) can also cause brain damage over time, which can lead to permanent difficulties in memory function. The hippocampus seems to be particularly vulnerable to damage in diabetes. Hippocampal shrinkage has been recorded in both elderly and young populations with type II diabetes.

People with diabetes are also at increased risk for both Alzheimer’s disease and vascular dementia.
