People Who Inspired Me

“Before you are a leader, success is all about growing yourself. When you become a leader, success is all about growing others.” – Jack Welch

Early in my life, I was inspired to become a leader by many different people. Each of them had a profound impact on how I viewed leadership and how my leadership style developed. As leaders, we should be continually inspiring others and asking ourselves what are they learning from me?

Here’s what I gained from those who inspired me.

General Eisenhower

As a boy growing up in the post-World War II era, I was struck by Eisenhower’s ability during the war to pull together an allied force comprised of so many different countries and political agendas, not to mention the individual personalities of all the generals who served under him.

It is no small feat for a leader to bring together people with a wide array of political and personal agendas in order to achieve a common cause, but he did it. He never lost sight of the vision, and he made sure that everyone who served under him shared that vision and was driven to achieve it. He didn’t let the petty differences of personalities and nationalities affect his leadership style; in fact, he embraced those differences and used them to build perhaps the greatest allied force in history.

President Lincoln

I admired President Lincoln from the first day I read about his life and his dedication to self-education. He didn’t allow his humble beginnings to limit his growth and vision of the future. Through his determination, hard work, and devotion to study he became, I believe, our greatest president. He inspired me to think beyond my circumstances and my perceived limited ability to strive to become better, and to do it so that I could help others just as he had done. Service to community goes hand-in-hand with leadership.

President Kennedy

President Kennedy knew how to unite a nation to achieve a common set of goals. To my young mind, he was a true visionary, leading the nation to go into outer space and beyond. He rallied the nation to get in shape physically, and asked us to serve rather than be served. His inaugural address, one of the best ever written, impacted me in many ways, but no more so than when he said, “Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country.” A leader has to inspire, and President Kennedy inspired us on that day.

Rev. Peter Marshall

Peter Marshall was a man who boldly proclaimed the gospel and whose passion for that mission eventually led him to be the chaplain of the US Senate. Two things impacted me when I saw the movie about his life: how short and unexpected life can be, and how dedication to a vision can take you beyond anything you imagined possible. Therefore, make every day count for something positive, and go at it as if today is the last day of your life.

Rev. Billy
