Chapter XIII

Solomon Haynes and Douglas had dinner at Selena’s, a Mexican-American restaurant in downtown Mountain Spring. They spoke about church mostly until they discovered a common love for basketball. The conversation got even more animated when they found out that they were both Celtics fans. They covered all the highlights of that basketball team over the past season, avidly discussing Paul Pierce's leadership of the team and both his and Kevin Garnett's skill on the court.

It was pushing seven-fifteen before they winded down, their plates having long been emptied and removed. They lingered over fruit drinks, which neither one had hardly touched because they had been talking so much. Douglas paid for his meal, although Solomon had offered since the dinner had been his idea.

As they headed out of Selena's, Douglas's phone rang again. He glanced at the screen. Karen. He ignored the call, not wanting to speak with her right now. They had just pulled out of the restaurant's parking lot when his mother called.

"Hi, mom. How are you?"

"I'm fine."

"How did you manage today with food?"

She had told him not to worry, because she'd brought stuff and wouldn't starve even though his fridge was empty.

"Oh, Douglas, you're going to be so happy. I cooked rice and peas, calaloo, and gluten stir fry."

"Where did you get all that?" He was surprised.

"I brought them with me."

"You brought cooked food on the plane?" It wasn't allowed. How had she smuggled it on?

"No, I had it in my checked-in luggage, and it wasn't cooked. Well the rice, peas, and calaloo weren't; the gluten was frozen."

"Mom, you're amazing." He laughed.

"I hope you're hungry."

He wasn't but he would eat some to appreciate her effort. "I'll be there shortly, mom," he promised.

"Have you heard from Karen?"

The concern in her voice touched him. How could his wife not see his mother for the caring person that she was? "Yes, I have," he answered. "She said she called the house but no one picked up."

"I didn't hear the phone ring, at least not while I was here."

"Did you go out?"

"Yes, I went for a walk."

"Maybe that's when she called."

"Maybe..."

The way she said the word with doubt and trailed off piqued his curiosity. "What aren't you saying, mom?"

The silence on the line spoke of her hesitation.

"Mom," Douglas prompted.

Reluctance rode out on her long sigh. Douglas started feeling uneasy. What was it that his mother was finding hard to say?

"I wasn't going to say anything, Douglas, but I'm concerned," Mrs. Watson began. "Earlier, I told you that I saw her walk away with someone. It was a man. They left just as I was stepping out for a walk. But before that she kissed him."

"What!" Douglas shot forward; but the seat belt snapped taut, constraining him. "Who is he?" he demanded as if his mother could possibly know the answer to the identity of the man who was making his vision shimmer with the colors of rage. Karen was cheating on him? What was she doing kissing another man?

"I hoped you'd know the answer to that question," his mother responded.
