Preparing to help the child face their fear of talking

Before using the techniques described in this chapter, try to ensure that:

All members of staff involved understand the nature of SM, the importance of environmental modifications (Chapter 8), and the need for a coordinated team approach.

All staff members are familiar with the stages of one-to-one interaction, have realistic expectations of the child and are aware of the best way to communicate with the child at each stage. The most important point is moving at the child’s pace, waiting until the child responds at each stage before proceeding to the next one. See Appendix D (online) for useful handouts.

A designated adult has spoken to the child to share their understanding of SM and the setting’s willingness to provide support (Handout 1 online). The child is aware that there is no rush and they will be able to talk as and when they feel ready.
