Acute coronary syndrome (ACS) describes a wide range of conditions that lead to low oxygen states in the heart muscle, also known as myocardial ischemia. The most prominent symptom is chest pain, resulting from an inadequate supply of blood to the heart. ACS conditions may range from unstable angina to a true heart attack, also known as a myocardial infarction, in which a portion of the heart muscle tissue infarcts (becomes dead tissue). ACS is caused by coronary artery disease, also known as coronary heart disease.

Heart attacks and associated heart disease are the number-one killer in the United States. About 350,000 Americans die each year of cardiovascular disease, and nearly 29 million more Americans suffer from some form of the disease. The most common problem is coronary artery disease, which usually causes angina pectoris and, left untreated, may eventually lead to acute myocardial infarction (heart attack).

Because of the critical nature of heart disease emergencies, you should treat every adult with chest pain as an acute coronary syndrome victim until proven otherwise.

This chapter lists the signs and symptoms associated with cardiovascular emergencies and outlines life-sustaining care you can provide until emergency personnel arrive at the scene.
