As the tranquil landscape was broken by the battle of these two nations, keen eyes kept an affected vigilance. Silent and unseen, the Indians stood watching from within the shadows of the dense forest, having withdrawn before the battle ever began. No one knew the backwoods like the Indians, nor the method of tactical fighting as they, but Washington, inexperienced with the Indians, had refused to listen to their advice. Instead, Washington desired to command them as his slaves. The Indians were a proud people and did not tolerate being disrespected or taken advantage of. The chiefs, who had accompanied Washington, could have changed the entire outcome at Fort Necessity by en-massing their braves, but as a result, by the time of the final engagement, had completely abandoned him.

The French allowed Washington to surrender Fort Necessity with the honors of war, taking with him his arms and the regimental colors he had hoped to display over the waters of the Ohio. The French flag was raised over the continent from the waters of the Potomac and Susquehanna to the Mississippi. Washington returned to Virginia and retired to Mount Vernon until he would be called upon again, to serve one year later under the command of General Edward Braddock in July 1755.
