Dead End

“You guys should have seen it. It was like a miracle.”

Eve’s face was glowing, and she held onto her handlebars with only one hand so she could gesture with the other. Adam peddled slowly beside her and listened with interest…and both eyes open, ready to swerve when she fell off.

“My mom looked fit to kill when she first saw me, but of course she couldn’t do the deed in front of a witness. So Maddie just sailed in there like a queen, all ‘thank you for generously loaning me your daughter’ and on and on about how much help I’ve been. Before my mom even realizes that she never knew I was doing all that, Maddie trots out the story about how I accidentally fell asleep and wasn’t found until the next morning, and then while mom’s still processing that, out comes the super expensive vase. Complete distraction.

“Then Maddie asked for some tea. My mom was so happy about the crystal that she made it instantly, and the next thing you know they’re chatting like old friends, and I’m told to go upstairs for a nap since I’ve obviously been working so hard. A nap! I went from grounded for life to a nap in less than ten minutes. Maddie is a genius.”

Adam shook his head. Naturally the power to deceive her mother would be the trait Eve would most admire in someone.

“I would buy her a present,” Eve went on, “except I mean, really. What could she possibly need? Other than less stuff.”

“Bookshelves,” said Logan.

Eve grinned. “Perfect! You’re a genius, too.”

“And don’t skimp,” said Adam. “No garage sale shelves. You owe her better.”

“Naturally,” said Eve. “Though for the record, she still says what she really wants is for us to find that power source and get rid of it.”

“How do you think we’re going to do that?” Adam wondered. “Get rid of it, I mean.”

“I guess like everything else, we’ll just figure it out as we go along,” said Eve.

They were nearly to the burned out house now, just the five of them again, since Maddie had agreed to keep the younger kids. This was the next logical place to start, but being here seriously gave Adam the creeps. He searched his brain for something to distract himself.

“How are the neighbor kids?” he asked Logan.

“I saw Garret last night after you guys left,” Logan said. “He was walking to the store, probably to get something for dinner. I asked if he wanted us to watch the little kids, but he said his mom was home. I don’t know. He seemed okay.”

“He’s eight and walking to the store to buy dinner for his family. He’s not okay,” said Alex.

Logan just kept riding for a minute. “There weren’t any bruises,” he said finally.

Adam felt sick to his stomach. He hadn’t even thought of that. “Have there been bruises before?”

“A few.”

“Logan, that’s horrible!” said Eve. “We have to do something!”

Logan winced and said nothing.

“We are doing something,” said Adam. “We’re getting to know them.
