Chapter Nine

“The one and only, darlin’,” Blake said, his familiar sinister tone striking fear into every inch of her body.

Tash gasped for air; each breath sent a rolling wave of needles through her skull. “I don’t understand. How…I mean, you’re dead.”

A grumble and gurgling laugh pierced her eardrums, sending a disgusting sourness shooting up from her gut.

“Surprise. Didn’t you know…I’ve got nine lives just like a cat—you can’t kill me; I’ll always be here to haunt your days and your nights.”

No. Oh God, no.

“Is everything okay, Tash?” Carmen’s voice called from the other side of the well.

Tash jumped and pressed the phone to her chest, covering the microphone. Her pulse raced, and she squeezed her eyes together, sucking in some deep, calculated breaths. She forced a smile and turned. Carmen’s concerned expression was nothing compared to the raging inferno building inside her chest.

“Everything’s fine. It’s just an old friend. I forgot they said they were going to ring this afternoon.” She slapped her forehead. “Duh, silly me. Do you mind if I take it? I’ll make it quick.”

Carmen stood still, her gaze drilling into her, but her fake smile didn’t fool Tash for a second. Carmen could tell she was lying. “Of course. We’ll continue when you’re done.”

“Great, thank you.” Tash beamed a fake smile and moved out of earshot, crushing the bark and dry leaves underfoot with haste.

The rushed beat of her heart kept the adrenaline pumping. To divert suspicion, she needed to appear normal, as though life was happy. It didn’t matter that her insides were at war with each other like an inexperienced matador fighting his first raging bull. She put the phone to her ear and forced calmness into her voice. “Now, where were we?”

“We were discussing your failed attempt at ending my life,” Blake barked. “You really are a piece of work. After all I did for you. I clothed you, gave you a job, I even gave you a place to stay, and how do you repay me?”

“All you did for me?” Tash rocked from one foot to the other, and her fingers tingled with the increased blood flow circuiting through her. “That’s a load of fucking bullshit and you know it.”

“Now, now, mind your language, sweet pea.” His condescending tone left a vile taste in Tash’s mouth. “Is that any way to speak to the man that holds your future in his hands?”

“What are you talking about? I decide my future.” Her body shook. If she could, she would have jumped down the phone and socked him one as hard as she could right in the kisser.

Blake cleared his throat. “I must say, I love what you’ve done with the new place. The decor is you all over, but I can see you still have that God-awful blanket your mother gave you. I’ll never know why you insisted on keeping it. I should have thrown it out when I had the chance.”

Oh God, he’s at my house, my new house.

Tash’s jaw dropped, and she gulped down her breath.
