Chapter Eight

“Whoa there, boy.” Jamie ran his hand down the young horse’s heaving flanks, soothing him, even as he spoke in the same quiet, calm voice he’d used all through the training session. “There’s no need to get so excited. Let’s try that again, shall we?”

Golden Lad tossed his head, pulling the lead rope Jamie held. He waited for the horse to settle before readjusting the rope and encouraging him to start trotting again. The young horse had had a bad fright the day he threw Kat’s father, winding himself badly into the bargain so Jamie had, after consulting with Tom, decided to go back to basics before attempting to ride the horse: groundwork, grooming, and plenty of contact. It was a lengthy process and needed plenty of patience, but every day, Jamie could see the improvement. One day, Golden Lad would be a fine horse for some lucky rider, maybe Kat herself. Or himself, if his plans worked out.

Jamie continued to play out the rope as the horse trotted around the ring in complete obedience to his instructions. The heat was beginning to feel oppressive as the sun made its inexorable way over to the high point of the sky, and Jamie was glad of the hat he’d started to adopt when working out and about. With the hat and the boots he’d bought earlier that week, he was beginning to look far more cowboy than Scot. Getting used to the sun on his skin, to the Montana air.

As the horse began to perspire, Jamie decided to call a halt and rub the animal down before returning him to the cool of the stall. It had become his routine over the last few days, schooling the horse every morning, returning to him every evening. And at some point, he hadn’t been able to help but notice just how content he was when out in the training pen, how at peace. The manual nature of the work suited him, the absorption it needed soothed him far more than the budgets and graphs and projections and project plans that made up the bulk of his usual working life, desk-bound and managing, only occasionally able to get his own hands dirty, too often directing others.

But today, he hadn’t been able to push his thoughts away as thoroughly as usual. Every day, there were more emails from Scotland. From his father—tone utterly irascible—as if Lucio’s lack of knowledge wasn’t the fault of the father who had ignored him but the Italian’s own willfulness. Jamie knew that his half-brother’s grasp of the finances and marketing was already equal to Jamie’s own, but the finer points of rotation, of water levels, estate management, livestock, and tenancies were a different matter. No wonder when he had been raised in a city, as part of a hotelier dynasty, never setting foot on a farm until the day he came to claim his heritage. If things didn’t settle down, then Jamie would suggest an estate manager—but an employee
