Section III

Elements for Sustained Long-Term Growth

The key to constructing a tall building is not simply what you see aboveground, but a solid foundation beneath the ground. High-growth projects are the same way—they can collapse if not supported by the right foundation.

A business can be launched into the market’s consciousness by just one catalyzing event, only to be just as quickly forgotten. Once you’ve satisfied the four prerequisites described in section one and gotten the attention of your core advocates using one or more of the best practices in the previous section, the final step is to make sure you have a solid foundation for long-term growth.

This last section goes through five foundational elements that I believe are critical for sustained long-term high growth.

Ned Renzi, my partner at Birchmere Ventures, who was also on the board at Cvent, likes to call it the “11-year overnight success.” It takes time to build a large company, even if you are growing quickly. The public will never be aware of most of the true building blocks as they are put into place. While there are techniques you can use to accelerate this growth and increase awareness, as described in the last section, the five best practices described in the following chapters are essential to ultimately sustaining your goals.
