CHAPTER ELEVEN

She had an answer that night before dinner. Missy dropped it in her lap as Elizabeth was reading in the drawing room. This was better than the regular post, Elizabeth thought.

Please come at midnight, my treasure, it read. You ignite me. I simply cannot wait to properly ask for permission. I must have you now. And my time grows short. If we do not meet this evening, we may never be able to see each other ever again.

Elizabeth crumpled the letter up. As she’d thought. No interest in anything other than whatever it was that men wanted to do with women. She was smarter than that. And she congratulated herself on communicating with him by letter, because it was much easier to resist the written word than the man in the flesh. She would be asleep by midnight, and she would not think of Burlington any longer.

At that moment, the maid announced that Georgiana and Mr. Darcy had arrived. They were joining them for dinner. Elizabeth hurried over to greet Georgiana.

“I didn’t know you were coming to dinner tonight,” she said.

“Darcy didn’t tell me either,” said Georgiana, “or I wouldn’t have called this afternoon. When I returned home, I had very little time to get ready, and I was most cross with him.”

“You look lovely, though, Georgiana,” said Darcy, sounding annoyed. “I don’t see why you must share every annoyance that flits across your brain with everyone on earth.”

Georgiana glared at him. “Elizabeth is hardly everyone on earth.”

Darcy looked Elizabeth over. “Perhaps not, but if you keep on so, Miss Bennet will have an awful opinion of me, and I should regret that.”

Elizabeth blushed in spite of herself. Darcy was very nice to look at, and she found herself drawn to his handsome features, especially his finely drawn lips. She thought of kissing those lips and turned an even deeper shade of scarlet.

“I’ll have you know,” said Georgiana, “that I have defended you to Miss Bennet most strenuously. Practically to the point of losing our friendship.”

“And what could you be defending me for?” said Darcy. He cocked his head and gazed at Elizabeth. “Have I done something that offended you, Miss Bennet?”

Elizabeth parted her lips. She couldn’t think of anything to say.

Georgiana cringed. “Why do I always speak without thinking?”

Darcy nodded slowly. “You heard gossip in town, then?”

Elizabeth stared down at her feet. She still couldn’t think of anything to say. Would Darcy deny it?

“You heard the story of me and Bianca,” Darcy said.

“She has a name?” Georgiana said, dismay all over her face. “Then it’s true?”

Darcy shifted on his feet. “What you have to understand—”

But he broke off when a servant entered the room to announce more guests. “Sir Andrew Moore and Mr. Crispin Burlington,” said the servant.

Elizabeth felt all the blood drain out of the face. She swallowed. She hadn’t thought he was going to be there. She was going to have to face him, and every time that she saw him, she completely lost her head. When she saw him, she became a wanton woman.
