Figure 7.2

INTRA-ANNUAL TEMPERATURE VARIABILITY, OVER 100 YEARS

SOURCE: Michaels et al., 1998.

NOTE: This figure incorporates 393 valid 5° longitude cells beginning in 1897 (open circles) and 1,041 cells beginning in the 1947 time series (filled circles).

Overall, the geographic variability in temperature anomalies has declined during the period of historical records, and the interannual variability levels in temperature anomalies are negatively related to mean hemispheric temperature. The less things vary from place to place, the less they vary from month to month. We achieved this result by combining two separate studies we published in back-to-back issues of Climate Research (Balling, Michaels, and Knappenberger 1998; Michaels et al., 1998). We found that as the planet warms, the month-to-month swings also decline.

Clearly, there is little support for the popular perception that our temperatures have become more variable. And indeed, the preponderance of the evidence points to lower variability in temperature, both over time and across space.
