You may be turning the focus of attack onto yourself, so you have to know that if the attacker comes after you, you’re going to run to that house, that shop or that building. If you go in, legs and arms flailing without any plan, you’re going to be in trouble. You may get away with it, you may not, but why take the risk when you can achieve the same result by throwing half a brick from ten yards away?

If you don’t want to throw things or shout because you’ll draw attention to yourself in a deserted street, then go to a doorway that you know you can get into and shout from there, or knock on someone’s window or door to attract their attention. If it’s sufficiently serious, throw a rock through a house or a shop window; that’ll definitely get a response.
