“Damn,” Jared breathed.

“That must have been…awful,” she said, standing next to him.

They had reached the crash site, and it was everything they had been expecting. Except…she hadn’t been expecting the visceral reaction that she had seeing the burned, mangled, and twisted metal and the obvious impact zone. Like many other places now, people had died here—died horribly.

Some days it seemed like the whole world was a graveyard. She was tired of stumbling across bodies.

She couldn’t take her eyes from the wreckage.

Nobody could have survived that. They hadn’t just gone down. They had smashed into the earth with such force that the fuselage was crushed on one side. Fire, or an explosion, had incinerated the remains.

“Looks like they didn’t even get to perform an autorotation,” Jared said.

Storm and Red stared at him.

“What? I’m not an idiot, you know,” he said seriously.

“I think they were flying too low and slow. Something must have gone wrong. Maybe they saw something on the ground,” Storm said.

“Black box?” Red asked.

Anna wondered just where the black box would be on something as smashed up and burned out as that helicopter, and whether they could even get it out if it still existed. Then they’d still have to transport it back to base.

Storm sighed and crossed his arms. “No.”

He studied the missing tail rotors and walked nearer. He cocked his head up at the broken overhead rotors and scanned the landscape around the crash site. There were no trees on this ridge, and the only higher ground was to their north.

“The other one looks untouched,” Anna said, looking over at the other chopper on the far side of the ridge. “So, they landed and saw the other team was…out of action, and…what?”

“And something happened,” Red said, chewing a piece of gum. “Something bad enough that they didn’t get back on that Black Hawk and get the hell out of here.”

Storm called went to the edge of the ridge and called the Gundersons on the radio while Anna and the others went to the other chopper. He called over his shoulder.

“Young, get your guys on security. Reed, take McCain and Johnson and look for signs of survivors.”

Red held up a hand. “Don’t fuck up any tracks!”

Sten gave Tor a look. “Maybe we should do that,” Sten told Storm. “It’ll be difficult to see anything because of the snow.”

“Go for it. Teach them a thing or two while you’re at it.”

He went back to getting a situation report from Jan Gunderson, and before Anna was out of range she heard Jurgen asking about her and smiled. She’d been adopted into the Gunderson tribe, for better or worse.

She and Jared followed Sten, Tor, and the others to the remaining chopper. It was in near perfect condition, as far as she could tell.

“Shit. Look at all that brass,” Reed said.

Anna stopped on the outskirts and stared. The machine guns were still mounted in their places and one of the cargo doors was open. Other than that, it looked completely normal.

“It looks like they lit something up big time,” Johnson said.
